About our mats

What are your mats made of?

Polypropylene marine rope, the same kind of rope commercial fishermen use to tie lobster and crab traps to their buoys. It’s built to sit in salt water, sun and ice, so it handles a front step with no trouble. Each mat takes a couple hundred feet of rope.

Who makes them?

Every mat is woven by hand in Wisconsin by Tom Doubleday. No two are exactly alike.

What’s the difference between the weaves?

  • Basketweave: two rope colors in a classic over-under pattern.
  • Triple Weave: three rope colors for bolder stripes and more texture.
  • Single Weave: one rope woven back and forth, in a solid color or stripes. Made by request.

Is there a warranty?

Yes. Every mat comes with a 3-year craftsmanship warranty. If the weave comes apart or the mat doesn’t hold its shape with normal use, contact us and we’ll repair or replace it. Normal wear, gradual color fading from sun, and damage from misuse aren’t covered.

Can I use one indoors?

Yes. They work great in mudrooms, entryways, cabins and campers. Indoors or out, put a non-skid rug pad underneath on smooth floors so the mat stays put.

Sizes and fit

What sizes do you make?

  • Regular: 22″ x 32″, $59
  • Large: 22″ x 36″, $69
  • Runner: 22″ x 48″, $99

Which size should I get?

A good rule is a mat about as wide as your door, or a little wider. A standard 32″ or 36″ door looks best with a Regular or Large. The Runner fits double doors, wide steps, docks, decks and long entryways.

How thick are they? Will my door clear it?

About 1.25″ thick. That’s no problem outside a door, but if the mat goes inside a door swing, measure the gap under your door first.

Care and weather

How do I clean it?

Pick it up and give it a good shake, or hose it off. It dries fast on its own. No vacuum needed.

Can I leave it out all year?

Yes. The rope doesn’t soak up water, so it won’t rot, mold or mildew, and it dries fast after rain. It holds up to Wisconsin winters, snow and road salt. When it gets icy, knock the snow off and shake it out.

Will it fade?

The rope is UV resistant, so it holds its color well. Like anything left in full sun for years, colors will slowly soften over time.

My mat slides. What can I do?

Put a non-skid rug pad underneath. On smooth surfaces like tile, sealed concrete or wood floors, always use a pad.

Ordering and shipping

How much is shipping?

A flat $15 per order anywhere in the U.S. Mats ship rolled up and wrapped to protect them.

How soon will it ship?

Every mat is woven by hand. If we have yours ready to go, it ships right away. If we don’t, we’ll weave it to order for you, which usually takes about a week. It can take a little longer during the busy show season, and we’ll let you know if it will.

Can I pick it up instead?

Yes, for free. Choose “Free pickup at Fish Creek Moccasin” at checkout and pick it up at 4199 Main St, Unit 3, Fish Creek, WI. Our mats are in stock there all year, so you can also stop in and pick one out in person.

Where else can I see the mats in person?

At the Sturgeon Bay Farmers Market on Saturdays in season and at craft fairs around Wisconsin and Minnesota. See our events page for dates.

Can I send one as a gift?

Sure. Enter the recipient’s address as the shipping address, and add a note at checkout if you’d like a gift message included.

Custom mats

Can I pick my own colors?

Yes. Use our custom mat builder to choose a weave, a size and your rope colors and see a preview. We’ll get back to you to confirm the details, price and timing.

Can I return a custom mat?

Custom mats are final sale because they’re made just for you. If one arrives damaged or defective, contact us and we’ll make it right. See our returns policy for standard mats.
